Flying fish:

          Flying fish cannot actually fly in the same manner as birds do, but they have remarkably gliding ability through the air.   
  • Scientific name of flying fish is Exocoetidae
  •  Flying fish have streamlined torpedo shape. They have pectoral fins that have similar function’s to the bird’s wings. 
  • Some species of flying fish have 4 wings. These four winged flying fish have large pectoral fins as well as large pelvic fins  
  • 64 species of flying fish around the world. They are grouped into 7-9 genera.
  •  Why they glide?🤔.         Flying fish gliding ability helps them to escape from predators.                  
  • When flying fish are in danger, they build up speed about 37 miles per hour under the water surface by wiggling their tails and holding their fins close to their body. Then they spread their wings and leap into the air, gliding for around 45 seconds. They can glide at the double speed they swim. They are known to accelerate from 30 Km/h in water to 60 Km/h in the air.
  • Flying fish can cover distance of more than 200 m and to a height of 1.2 m
  • Mostly flying fish are around 20 to 30 cm in length.
  • Largest species of flying fish is California Flying fish, which is found in the pacific ocean that can grow up to 45 cm in length.
  • Cheilopogon pinnatibarbatus californicus.It is found in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, from Oregon to Baja California.
  • Flying fish spend most of their time in the open ocean but come close to shore at night to forage and lay eggs in the protection of kelp beds. 
  • Average life of flying fish is up to 5 years.
  • Light attracts Flying fish like many other sea animals and fisherman take advantage of this by flashing light with substantial results.🧐.
